Migraine Description

Migraine is a chronic neurological disorder characterized by moderate to severe headaches, and nausea. It is about three times more common in women than in men. The typical migraine headache is unilateral (affecting one half of the head) and pulsating in nature and lasting from four to 72 hours; symptoms include nausea, vomiting, photophobia (increased sensitivity to light) and phonophobia (increased sensitivity to sound); the symptoms are generally aggravated by routine activity. Approximately one-third of people who suffer from migraine headaches perceive an aura—transient visual, sensory, language, or motor disturbances signalling the migraine will soon occur.

Traditional allopathic treatment is with analgesics for the headache, an antiemetic for the nausea, and the avoidance of triggers.

Migraine Causes

The cause of migraine headache is unknown; the most supported theory is that it is related to hyperexcitability of the cerebral cortex and/or abnormal control of pain neurons in the trigeminal nucleus of the brainstem. Moreover, fluctuating hormone levels indicate a migraine relation: 75 percent of adult patients are women, although migraine affects approximately equal numbers of prepubescent boys and girls. Propensity to migraine headache sometimes disappears during pregnancy, but in some women, migraines may become more frequent.

How does Upper Cervical Chiropractic Care Relate to Headaches and Migraines?

Migraine Triggers. Knowing what triggers your migraines and understanding why, can help minimize some of the migraines you suffer from. Unfortunately, there are both external and internal factors that trigger migraines. This makes it virtually impossible to fully eliminate migraines by just trying to avoid triggers.

The cause of migraines is not the same as a migraine trigger. The actual cause or reason you get migraines, while others do not, may be found in overstimulation of the brain stem by joint motion sensors in the upper part of your neck, particularly where the head and neck join (C1 and C2 Vertebrae).

An internal factor, such as brain stem irritation caused by overstimulation can disrupt certain natural functions of the human body. For example, brain stem irritation can cause abnormal hormone production or regulation, thereby triggering a migraine. Overstimulation affects how the body naturally reacts to heat, exercise and even weather changes. We address the cause of the overstimulation by correcting an injury or misalignment of the upper cervical spine.

Upper Cervical Specific Chiropractic Care's objective is to safely and effectively remove the brain stem irritation being caused by an injury in the upper neck. Upper Cervical Specific Chiropractic protocols include precision x-ray analysis to determine the direction of displacement and fixation. Infrared paraspinal thermography is used to determine the degree of nervous system dysfunction that may be caused by the injury. It is also used at every office visit to determine if another correction is needed and after every adjustment to determine if the adjustment was able to restore proper nervous system function.
