Whiplash Description

Whiplash is most commonly received by passengers in a motor vehicle that is struck from behind by another vehicle. When the head is suddenly “jerked” back and forth (“whipped”) beyond its normal limits, the muscles and ligaments supporting the spine and head can be overstretched or torn. The discs between spinal bones can bulge, tear or rupture. Vertebrae can be forced out of their normal position causing stiffness, pain and nerve damage. The spinal cord and nerve roots in the neck can become stretched or irritated. This is all possible even with little damage to the vehicle. In fact, research shows that increased “crushing” (as seen with higher-speed impacts) of the vehicle actually absorbs some of the shock of the impact and can lessen injury to the car’s occupants. When “crushing” does not occur (as seen with lower-speed impacts), nearly all of the shock is transferred to the driver and passengers.

Whiplash Causes

Whiplash injuries can also be sustained from concussions received playing football, headers in a soccer game, head to head or ball to head collisions in basketball, falls in gymnastics where the athlete lands on their head or a simple slip and fall on a slippery surface that jerks the neck after hitting the ground on their butt.

Cervical Spine
(Bones of the Neck)

C1 and C2 are the most vulnerable to misalignment and subluxation and have the most neurological influence on the Brain Stem and Central Nervous System. This is the most important part of the entire spine to be functioning properly.

Subluxations of C1 and C2 will alter the alignment and motion of the entire spine causing pain in almost any part of the body. Altered motion of C1 and C2 can also cause brain stem irritation and interfere with the vital messages being transmitted between the brain and all of the organs, tissues and cells of the body.

How does Upper Cervical Chiropractic Care Relate to Whiplash?

The upper cervical spine or the top two bones in the neck are the most vulnerable and susceptable to injury from a whiplash event because they are the only bones in the entire spine that are not connected to the backbone by vertebral disc. There are NO discs in the upper cervical spine. A relatively unkown FACT is that vertebral discs are very hard and firmly attached to the vertabrae above and below which helps make the spine a very strong and sturdy structure. Therefore, since the Upper spine does not have discs it makes it the most unstable part of the spine. For this reason the top bone in the neck (C1 - Atlas) can rotate 45 degrees whereas every other bone in the spine can only rotate about 4 - 7 degrees. More offten than not the upper spine is over looked and the injury is never corrected properly or reversed.

Upper Cervical Specific Chiropractic Care can safely and effectively reverse this injury. Upper Cervical Specific Chiropractic protocols include precision x-ray analysis to determine the direction of displacement and fixation. Infrared paraspinal thermography is used to determine the degree of nervous system dysfunction that may be caused by the injury. It is also used at every office visit to determine if another correction is needed and after every adjustment to determine if the adjustment was able to restore proper nervous system function.
