What is Autism?
According to the Autism Society of America, Autism is a complex developmental disability that typically appears during the first two years of life and is the result of a neurological disorder that affects the functioning of the brain, impacting development in the areas of social interaction and communication skills. Both children and adults on the autism spectrum typically show difficulties in verbal and non-verbal communication, social interactions, and leisure or play activities. In addition to the psychological complications there are also in many cases a number of visceral problems. Such as digestive disorders and Glutten Intollerance. Along with digestive problems associated with gut comes weekened immune function. Immune function can be diminished or comprimised because most if not all immature immune molecules migrate to the gut where they mature. If the gut is not healthy, or has been overly assaulted with antibiotics the immature immune molecules do not mature leaving the child with a weakened immune system. Cost of Autism The bigger concern is the continually increasing prevalence of this disorder, how this disorder affects the stress on the individual families, the cost of treating or taking care of these people and who will take care of this growing population when their parents and or families can no longer care for them. According to the most recent report from the CDC in February 2007 its Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report indicated that the prevalence is now 1 in 110 children equaling 280 million Americans. The estimated lifetime cost for treating and taking care of autism in America is $35 billion per year. Individually per year it is estimated that lower level disability costs a family $38,000 and higher level disability costs $43,000 in direct costs. What causes Autism? The exact cause of autism is not known. Research has pointed to several possible factors, such as, certain types of infections, and problems occurring at birth and heredity. The body's immune system may inappropriately produce antibodies that attack the brains of children causing autism. Studies of people with autism have found abnormalities in several regions of the brain, which suggest that autism results from a disruption of early brain development. However, some may say there is a formula of experiences, exposures to heavy metals, chemical asaults and traumas that could contribute to the outcome of the Autism Spectrum of Disorders. It is Strongly argued, especially by the medical community, that vaccines cannot cause autism. Vaccines by themselves may not cause autism on their own but could they be a possible ingredient for autism. How can Upper Cervical Care help? Upper Cervical Chiropractic care serves to restore the body's own ablilities to heal and properly organize all the body's many functions. This is accomplished by removing brainstem irritation coming from faulty biomechanics in the top two vertebrae in the neck. Injuries can be sustained many times without there being any immediately noticeable affects. In children with autism it is suspected and commonly reported to us that the child birth was difficult, possiblly leading to an upper cervical injury. Any parent knows that even during the first two years of life many accidents, tumbles and falls happen, and with a sigh of relief after they stop crying, we assume and hope nothing bad has happened. However, if an injury is sustained in the upper cervical region, symptoms do not immediately insue. Instead, the injury slightly deminishes brainstem function decreasing the bodies ability to adapt. Therefore, overtime many systems in the body begin to function at lower capacity including the immune system. When the immune system is comprimised many well intended interventions to improve the immune system, such as vaccines, can have adverse reactions. To resolve this problem a very calculated and specific corrective procedure called IUCCA Upper Cervical Chiropractic is performed and the nervous system is allowed to do its job. Restore maximum health and healing to the body. Dr Marc DeMeester presents "Health Talks" in more detail on Autism Spectrum Disorders and Upper Cervical Chiropractic through out the year.
